HKU’s MBBS curriculum sets out to create doctors who are committed to lifelong learning. Throughout the MBBS study, students will be inspired to explore and deliver effective, humane, and ethical care as a highly skilled medical professional ready to tackle the health challenges of today and tomorrow.
The Distinguished MedScholar study track
Our Distinguished MedScholar study track further nurtures students to become a scholar of academic excellence and compassionate member of the medical community by a series of activities such as academic workshops, community-based projects and the elite mentorship programme.
Students admitted to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) are provided with the following arrangements:
- guaranteed residential places in student hall(s), with hall fees to be covered by possible financial support from HKUMed;
- guaranteed an opportunity to pursue an extra university degree in addition to MBBS and graduate in the normative study period of six years; and
- guaranteed that elite mentorship be offered where students could make their own choice of mentors from within the Faculty or the University.
During your MBBS study, you will focus on four key areas of learning.
- You will build a thorough understanding of human biology in stages of health and disease.
- The programme will also equip you with the skills you need as medical professionals, including diagnostic skills, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and clinical management.
- You will take a broader look at the medical profession and explore population health and the related services, economics, and policy.
- Finally, your degree subject will explore medical ethics, professional attitude, and behaviour.
In addition to the student-centred teaching approach, the curriculum also adopts system-based and problem-based learning.
Students in MBBS (DMS) can complete the programme in six years plus a Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) to be undertaken during Enrichment Year (EY) in the third year. Upon completion of MBBS and MRes[Med] and the one-year internship, students will receive financial support from the Faculty to pursue a PhD at a renowned university and potentially join the Faculty as clinical academics upon completion of PhD. Students may also choose other Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree option in EY, and graduate with an extra degree.
Following graduation, you will be required to complete a one-year residency in a public hospital before registering as a licensed doctor in Hong Kong. Your medical training will enable you to pursue a variety of exciting career options in public hospitals, private practice, clinical teaching, medical research, and healthcare administration.
